New Year's Resolution?
How many times have you found yourself making one, only to realise that 4 weeks on you’ve forgotten all about it, or that you gave up in week 2?
Resolutions are often like diets, they work for a little bit but then you go back to what you have taught yourself to do. It’s a quick fix, you feel good for suggesting the idea to yourself, for trying out for a bit, but then it gets tough, tiresome or boring and you stop. Then you feel bad.
11 months on you look back and say “if I hadn’t stopped I’d be there right now!”, oh well there’s always this year…
What i’m asking you to do is not make a momentary heart felt promise to yourself at New Year, but create a vision of who you are going to be in a years time, 5 years time or 10 years time, you decide, but start with a powerful vision of your life to be and know what you want. Do it now.
Prepare yourself for the challenge, the action you will have to take, every day, one small step at a time. Understand before you start that there will be times you want to quit, because it’s easy to quit. Understand that there will be times when you lose your way, everyone gets lost, but that when you find the path back you will have grown in strength as you overcame that challenge. Understand that as long as you don’t give up, as long as you are prepared to take it all, you will succeed.
Start now, not in January, start while you feel your blood beginning to race, while the butterflies are in flight, while the hairs raise up on your neck. That’s what a strong vision feels like. Start right now making a plan, you know where you want to be and what it looks like, so write out that date and then start working backwards to now.
Date your challenges, measure your success and record what you have done, because you will need to read that success to realise that you have moved forward.
And it’s all about moving forward, even if it’s just a small amount, its better than staying still. Each time you move a step further, the old you is a step further behind, and you add little by little to your growth and move on in your journey toward realising that vision.
I know that you can make it, I know that you want to do it differently this year. Don’t let anyone tell you you can’t. Don’t listen to those who say it’s not possible, be relentless, it doesn’t matter how many times you fail on the way, all that matters is that you stay the course, commit to your goal, sacrifice things in your life that hold you back, and push on.
This year don’t accept average, you were born great, rise to your greatness this year.
2017 is your year, go get it.
