Sam Coxon Sensei - England Ace!
It was only a short time ago that one of our students, Sam Coxon was struggling to believe he deserved a place on the England squad, but through hard work, training regularly both in and outside of session times every week, and constantly seeking knowledge to improve his understanding and skill set for competitive fighting, Sam has made huge leaps forward over the past 12 months.
It was a proud moment for CDMA when 3 of its members were selected to represent JKS England at the World Karate Championships last September 2016, and this to me seemed to be a spurring point that pushed Sam forward and gave him the belief he needed to compete and fight for the top spots on the JKS squad.
Competitive karate is very intense and the level is very high compared to many amateur sports. It requires a practitioner to improve not only his physical fitness, but technical and tactical knowledge to ensure they move forward in the game. It's a lot of knock backs (literally) and failures that eventually, with a hardened resolve to be better, will eventually bring results.
Earlier this month we saw Sam return from the British Karate Federation's 4-nations championships with gold in the individual kumite masters division.
This was the second time a member of CDMA has won this prestigious title. Another lift for Coxon Sensei, and putting him in fine fettle for his most recent and outstanding success - Bronze, Silver and Gold! At the Cumbrian Open last weekend.
A full sweep of medals for Kumite (fighting) in an event that attracts competitors from all over the UK and a massive achievement.
Sam has been lucky enough to train alongside JKS England team mates at the CDMA in preparation for his events, as well as take part in regular training sessions at the Abingdon Dojo from Head England Coach Matt Price Sensei.
It is my hope that adult and junior competitors alike can take inspiration from Sam Sensei's recent success, that has not come easily but through grit, determination and a desire to keep improving himself.
Ossu!
