Do You Know Your Sensei?
About Matt Price Sensei and why he is a regular visitor to CDMA, Part 1.
Matt Price started karate in 1982. At the age of 13 he moved location to join the infamous Leeds Shotokan Karate Club under the guidance of Bob Rhodes Sensei, which would start to be the turning point in his karate career, going from lack lustre green belt to force of nature!
After hard work in the dojo and competing locally, at just 15 years old Matt was asked to join the KUGB Junior England Squad. This would lay the foundation for things to come and by the age of 16 he was fighting for the Leeds senior men’s kumite team.
Ten years on from when Matt first stepped in to a dojo, he experienced his first European success at the European Shotokan Karate Championships in Monaco 1992, where he took the individual Bronze Kumite medal and was part of the winning junior team. Yes that’s ten years of hard work to experience one moment of success internationally! How often do we see people give up after just a few attempts in life? This is one of the great learnings Karate and competition can bring.
It is important to me that our students, particularly our juniors understand that no one rises to success quickly in Karate. Perseverance, and a strong sense of determination are required of those who seek to become a black belt, let alone an international competitor. Regular training and commitment to classes is the only way this can happen.
Matt Sensei is now one of the UK’s most sought after coaches both in the training community and in the competitive arena. He is the head coach of the JKS England Team and the All-Styles EKF Northern Region Squad coach.
When Matt Sensei comes to teach he not only shares his knowledge of competitive Karate but his knowledge of Karate-Do, his experience training with many of the world’s best Karateka, and his many trips to Japan.
It is my hope as the head coach at Can Do that our students understand the unique and fantastic opportunity they have been given to train under such a figure head in karate, on several occasions, for FREE!
Make every attempt to attend his classes, in order to grow from his teachings, and become more motivated than ever to achieve more in your own training. The only way to do this, is to keep turning up to our classes.
More to come next week,
