How martial arts teaches us skills for life
There a numerous
forms of martial art, including sub-set styles of combat such as Jeet Kune Do,
Karate and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to name a few. The teaching is different for
each style, and students usually find a natural affiliation to one or another.
But there are
certain skills that all martial arts teach everyone – how to cope with the demands and challenges of
everyday life – essential
life skills.
All martial arts
teach both defense and combat and focus on the development of an individual’s physical, mental and moral aspects. The aim
is to progress all these attributes through training, competition and
reflection.
Respect is a
value that runs through everything that is taught, but other personal attributes
are developed as we train including the ability to identify personal goals,
build character, self-expression, resilience, tenacity, self-confidence,
tolerance, problem solving, experiencing cultural differences, perseverance –
the list can go on and on!
Karate
Karate is a blocking and striking martial art, based around self-defense. Its real aim is to develop the student’s character and build dedication and perseverance. It carries the traditional Japanese traditions of bowing to one’s opponent which teaches respect and boundaries.
Most students who choose Karate improve their physical fitness and feel safer, and many go on to take part in competition.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ)
BJJ is a grappling based martial art system that develops strategic thinking. A smaller, weaker person could overcome a larger opponent by anticipating their moves and setting them up for a counter move. This undeniably builds self-confidence and self-belief alongside forward thinking!
Since it is a very physical form of martial art, with a lot of body contact and floor contact, it can also help to relive frustration and tension, whilst teaching self-restraint.
Jeet Kune Do (JKD)
JKD is a concept developed by Bruce Lee to suit the individual’s physicality and personality. It combines techniques from other martial arts, including the use of clinching, grappling and striking.
The primary lessons in JKD are physical development - improving speed, strength and endurance. Self-expression however is a big draw to many students, who can shape their style of combat according to their personality and body type.
The common thread that runs through every class we teach here at Can Do Martial Arts is respect and resilience. With those two life skills under your belt, you have the best foundation for a happy life.
