Why bother? I haven’t done it in a while, missed too much…
Familiar thought? I know i’ve had that phrase or similar pop in to my head from time to time.
Ah, i missed my workouts this week, ah, it’s too late to start now, ah, whats the point? if i’d kept going then it’d be worth it, but i’m too far behind now, it’s not going to work.
Or how about this…
, oh i’ll start that on Monday, well you know next week, well now it’s almost the holidays so, whats the point, I telll you what, lets make a real effort to do that once the kids go back to school, ...now i know what you’re thinking, I did say when the kids went back to school, but little Jonnie has his sports everyday and I’ve got to take him, so as soon as the season is over things will calm down and i’ll be right on that goal, ...no no no! I haven’t forgotten, but it’s hard right now as it’s the holidays again and I’ve got to keep those kids busy, when they’re back at school it’ll be easier in the routine you know….
There’s always something isn’t there? Often times I people tell me, it's just not "the right time”. Well I always ask them, when will it be “the right time”. Because that phrase doesn’t exist. The right time will never be there unless you are brave enough to make a decision to change right now. You can always fill your time with other things rather than face your fear and take on the goals you really want to achieve in order to make a positive change in your life.
No it’s not easy, and yes you will probably fail on the first attempt, but failure is part of growth, and from it we learn to do things better, change the way we act, readdress our goals or change course. Failure does not mean that you stop, it’s there to help us be better than we were before we started.
So the next time you think “why bother”, remember it’s because you are not where you want to be, and the only way you can get there is if you change something. In order for that to happen, you have to do something different, embrace your fear and step forward, because every little action counts, it accumulates, it compounds and then suddenly you are there!
