The KUGB is hosting the European Shotokan karate-Do Association Championships on 22 – 23 November at the K2 Stadium in Crawley, West Sussex. The KUGB England Squad are current ESKA European Champions – as well as current WSKA Champions – and will be competing alongside their colleagues from Wales, Scotland and Ireland.

It will be a fantastic event to watch.

Friday 6pm Karate Class

This is just to let you know that the Friday Karate class that starts at 6pm will now finish at 7pm instead of 7.30pm. This is due to the small number of people wanting to stay on for the extra half hour. This slight change in time will be effective this coming Friday – 14th November.

As of January we will be adding extra classes on to the timetable including a class of higher grades only (brown belt and above). Look out for these in the New Year.

Changes to JKD classes

The following changes have been made to the JKD classes:

Friday’s will now start at 7pm instead of 7.30pm. The class will therefore finish at 9pm instead of 9.30pm. This slight change in time will be effective as of this coming Friday – 14th November.

There is a change in venue for the Monday night JKD class. This is effective immediately – first class Monday 17th November.
Instead of being held in Wallingford this class will now be held at Abingdon Boys School on Park Road in Abingdon (OX14 1DE).

The best place for you to park (as we are currently not allowed to use the school car park – hopefully this will change in the New Year) is Bath Street or Larkhill Road and then walk down the alleyway to the new Sports Centre (only about a 2 minute walk). Do not park on Park Road or around Albert Park as they have clamping in process – very expensive we have found out!!!

The class starts at 8pm as usual and will finish at 9pm. We will be using the custom made dojo in the sports centre which is upstairs, totally private and with a sprung floor!!

Christmas Holidays

It has been both a busy and successful 2008 so far with new classes starting at new schools and whole host of competition success too.As you know Can Do Martial Arts Academy strives to run at least 48 weeks of the year, and it will be 15 months on from our last little break that we will be taking some holiday time. I think another successful academy grading this December and a new Black Belt (Fingers crossed for Harry James to be Can Do’s first ever Black Belt!!) will be a fine way to end the year and start a new one. I’m also excited to say some of our JKD students are competing in a Mixed Martial Arts tournament this weekend in Nottingham – good luck guys.

So in light of the fact that attendance over the last Christmas period averaged less than 5 people per class, we have decided that training will finish on Friday the 19th December 2008 and resume on Friday 2nd January 2009. Having graded and received your new belt (karate students) I think you’ll be looking forward to a rest.

We look forward to seeing the introduction of new classes, Instructors and a new timetable in 2009 and further successes of all our students and teachers.

So just to restate we will be training on Friday the 19th December 2008 as normal, then we’ll be back to train, as normal, on Friday the 2nd of January 2009.

Half Term Karate Classes

The following classes have a change in start time only:

Wednesday Brightwell 9am start time
Friday Blewbury 9am start time

All other classes will remain the same.

Black & Brown Belt Course

FREE Black & Brown belt course in Lichfield on the 2nd November 2008.

Sensei Sherry, 8th Dan and Sensei Poynton 7th Dan are running a free Black & Brown belt course on Sunday 2nd November.

King Edward VI Leisure Centre, Kings Hill Rd, Lichfield, Staffs, WS14 9DE

Training Times:

Brown Belts 10:30am - 12:00pm
Black Belts 12:00pm - 1:30pm

All those wanting to train must bring their current KUGB licence with them as well as gumshields and hand-mitts. Please let us know if you think you will be attending this training course.

Wantage Shotokan Karate Competition Results

A strong team attended the Annual Wantage Shotokan Karate Competition on Sunday 12th October, from Can Do Martial Arts, who did our Academy proud and dominated events in both Kata and Kumite.

Our Junior Team competed within age & height categories, whilst the Senior Team competed in grade categories, they were as follows:

Matthew Duckett - joint 3rd place in both Kata and Kumite
Jasmine Ewart
Arnaud Gay - 2nd in Kata
Luke Gilbert – 1st in Kumite
Harry James – 2nd Kata and 1st Kumite
Lauren James – 1ST for Kata and 2nd for Kumite
Judith James - 2nd in Kata
Zoe King - 2nd in Kata and 2nd in Kumite
Sensei Stella Vasilliou - 1st in Kata and 1st in Kumite

The squad came third in the competition overall. We also enjoyed the support of many members of the Academy, who came to cheer us on, on the day. All team members enjoyed great camaraderie and did the Academy proud.

Sensei Ben spent the day refereeing the competition on behalf of Wantage Karate Club – he showed fair, consistent and tough judging throughout the day, which meant that high standards were maintained, making everyone’s achievements all the greater. Well done!

Karate Grading

The next Can Do Martial Arts Karate grading will be held as follows:

Dates: Saturday 13th December 2008
Venue: Didcot Girls School, the new sports hall (OX11 7AJ)
Time: Training at 10am, children’s grading from 11:15am, adults grading from 2:30pm

You must have your sensei’s permission before grading and have an up to date licence book. Grading will cost £20 per person. Further details will be sent to everyone closer to the date.

New Karate Class

As of Monday 20th October there will be a new Karate class for children only every Monday at the Centre 70 in Wallingford (OX10 0DT). The class will start at 5pm till 6pm.

Women’s Self Defence Course

This highly informative 2 hour course will provide participants with simple and effective tools to be able to defend themselves against potential attackers using simple, easy to remember techniques.
