Thank you to all those students who took part and congratulations to you all. In our Junior Section Ben Claridge entered the Boys over 5ft 5 Kumite, Tom Randle and Jasper Laidlaw took part in the Children’s mixed Kata, gaining their first experience at a large competition event.

Lauren James, our reigning National Champion in Ippon Kumite, became the Southern Region Champion in Ippon Kumite, taking the Gold! A sterling result from a dedicated karateka, who has also been in bed for the past few weeks with a nasty illness, making her success even more amazing!

Luke Gilbert took Silver in the Boys under 5ft Shobu Ippon kumite event against one of the top junior competitors in the country, an excellent result too!

And Dylan Richards did an amazing job at his first Southern Regions to join Lauren in the medals, taking third place and a Bronze Medal in the Ippon Kumite section – fantastic!

The future of Can Do Martial Arts certainly seems bright and the Juniors seem set on showing the seniors how it is done!

Thank you and well done to Shannon and Sensei Nigel Couch, Brigid Sundaram and Sensei Adam Asher for their participation and great spirit in the contest. And congratulations to Sensei Sam Coxon and Sensei Ben Richardson on a quarter final placing in the male individual kumite event.

We hope to see more of our students joining the Competition Squad in the future and further successes at the National Championships in May.

Best wishes

Sensei Bob Poynton 7th Dan, was present to take us all through some brain teasing training exercises before conducting the actual grading exam. Everyone did fantastically well and I was very proud of all our students and of the teaching quality our instructors had been able to produce in order to assist those grading in their success.I believe this grading saw the most number of students grading (102) and an amazing 12 students achieved a double grade from white belt straight to red belt! Half of these students came from Henley - an outstanding achievement by one Academy! Well done Sensei Jazz.

We saw some of our juniors after months/years of training manage to pass their first grade and others demonstrate their consistency in their training and attitude by achieving another full grade.

I was highly impressed by everyone’s behaviour throughout and feel all our students are a credit to us and their families.

May I just thank Sensei Virginia here for doing such a wonderful job of organising, a Christmas Party, Prize Giving and Grading all in one weekend. I don’t know many people who have such a talent and it made the whole weekend enjoyable, thank you.

I’d also like to say congratulations to our prize winners this year; students who have always worked hard, strived to improve and are a pleasure to teach. Each year we present trophies to a few chosen students, usually at our summer event but as you know things got moved along a bit this time.

Those students who won Excellence in Karate are: Eleanor Gale, Sam Coxon, Jacob Allington, Tom Randle, Aidan Brzakalik, Jasper Laidlaw and Joe Nicholas.

Those students who won our Most Promising Karateka are: Caleb Pell, Jayne D’Arcy-Ryan, Cameron Butcher, Joanne McCabe, Issie Bonventre, Toby Ritson and Jack Mason.

A final thanks to all the instructors at CDMA for their hard work, support and effort over the past 12 months, I think it has been one of the best.

Merry Christmas!

Sensei Ben Richardson

We wanted to share with all of you the great success of our senior karate students this weekend, who passed their Black Belt grading at Reading Leisure Centre, under the watchful eyes of Sensei Andy Sherry (8th Dan) and Sensei Frank Brennan (7th Dan). Following a good training session our students were put through their paces in a rigorous grading procedure. Joss Williams showed great spirit and commitment as he continued to grade after breaking his foot in the fighting section! He soldiered through and was rewarded with his Black Belt. The other successful students were two of our top Juniors, Luke Gilbert and Ben Claridge who have showed a big change in their attitude and commitment to training over the past year. Richard Ivimey-Cook recovering from a broken foot at his last attempt at Shodan (is there a theme here?) performed brilliantly in his kumite section to achieve his Black Belt this time. Over all the standard of our Academy was excellent.

Brigid Sundaram and Daniel Glenfield, along with Jasmine Ewart were unlucky in my opinion not to pass on this occasion, but I know their commitment and determination to their training will ensure a pass next time round, if it were down to me they’d all be Black Belts.

We are very proud of all our students, they all put on an excellent display of karate and showed great character throughout the grading process, not to mention the hours of training they have all put in over the past 6 months.

Well done to all of you!!

On Saturday 3rd October 2009, at Egham Shotokan Karate Club, Surrey, Sensei Stella Vassiliou undertook her 3rd Dan grading, being assessed by Sensei Bob Poynton (7th Dan), Sensei Frank Brennan (7th Dan) and Sensei Andy Sherry (8th Dan).

Sensei Stella passes her 3rd Dan grading!

After her two hour training session was completed, Sensei Stella was faced with her biggest challenge to date in martial arts - Sandan. Adding to the pressure was the fact she was the only lady grading out of the 18 other contenders. Having committed herself to a disciplined training regime over the past few months we are very pleased to announce Sensei Stella passed her grading demonstrating a very high standard of karate. We are proud to have her as a member of our academy and one of our top instructors. We hope Stella’s determination and positive attitude to training will be an inspiration to many of our students aspiring for greatness in the martial arts.
